On April 13, the Sharon Board of Selectmen approved the revamping of the “Old Corral” section of Deborah Sampson Park to make it into an official dog park. The “Old Corral” section is located between Cedar and Gunhouse Streets; this area will be a great addition to the “Sharon Greenway” that connects Deborah Sampson Park with the Massapoag Trail.
The new dog park will become one of over 600 official dog parks nationwide.
The Commonwealth has several, including parks in Boston, Framingham, Cambridge and Jamaica Plain. Before the Dog Park, Sharon dogs had no place to run freely, as many of the area recreation parks banned dogs, while others restricted dogs to being on a leash at all times. Happily, that is no longer the case and we are excited that the dog park will benefit not only dog owners, but the entire community by preserving a beautiful, secluded forest area for a low impact use.
However, the realization of this project is dependent on the help of the Sharon community. Funds are needed to facilitate the cleanup, address seating needs, and to put up fencing and signage within the park. We encourage you to contribute to the building of Sharon’s new Dog Park. This will surely be great addition to our town, not only for our canine friends but for everyone. Help us bring about the park’s completion and make it something special, a park of which we can all be proud.
