Dog Biscuits

Recipe 1 - Delectable Dog Biscuits

1 cup white flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
½ cup wheat germ
½ cup dry milk
½ teaspoon salt
6 Tablespoons fat drippings from meat, or margarine
1 egg
1 teaspoon brown sugar
½ cup water

Mix all the dry ingredients together, then cut in the fat until the mixture resembles corn meal.  Beat the egg and sugar together, add to the dry mixture.  Add just enough water to make a stiff dough.  Knead until pliable.  I often use a Kitchaid stand mixer to make these and just do all the mixing an kneading in the bowl, letting the mixer do the work.

Roll out to ½ inch thick, and cut into your preferred shape. If you are rolling them like cookies on a floured board, you can put them directly onto an ungreased baking sheet. I usually put the rolled dough on a greased baking sheet and use a pizza cutter to make them into squares. Bake at 325 degrees for 30-40 minutes or until browned.  To crisp them, I usually leave them in the oven after I shut it off and let them get extra crunchy.

Recipe 2 - Peanut Butter Treats

1 ½ cups white flour
¾ multigrain oatmeal or uncooked quick cooking oats
¼ cup honey crunch wheat germ ( regular wheat germ also works just fine)
¼ cup peanut butter – it doesn’t matter if it is smooth or crunchy
¼ cup salad oil
¼ cup honey
½ cup water
1 teaspoon baking powder

Mix together at low speed 1 cup of the flour with the rest of the ingredients until blended. With a spoon, stir in the remaining ½ cup of flour.  With floured hands, on a well floured surface, knead the dough until it holds together.  Roll to ¼ inch thick. Cut into preferred shapes and bake on an ungreased baking sheet for 20 minutes. You can also put the rolled out floured dough directly onto the baking sheet and cut them into squares if special shapes are not important to you ( and I can assure you the dog is not fussy about the shape!). Turn off the oven and let cookies remain in the oven for another hour. Cool on a wire rack before storing them.

Recipe 3 - Good Dog Bones

1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
½ cup wheat germ
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 ¼ cup smooth peanut butter
¾ cup milk

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment.

Whisk together the flour, wheat germ, and sugar. Beat peanut butter and milk together.  Using the low speed on a mixer, mix into the dry ingredients until just combined.  Turn onto a lightly floured board and knead lightly.  Roll to ¼ inch thick. Cut into desired shapes such as dog bones or stars and bake for 15 minutes.  Let cool on the baking pan for 2 minutes before moving them to cooling racks. Store 2-3 days wrapped at room temperature or refrigerate for longer storage. They also freeze well.
