Tips for Keeping Your Dog Cool in Summer

Here are some tips from DoodyCalls to help keep your dog comfortable, COOL and safe in the summer heat. (Note: DoodyCalls removes the waste from Sharon Dog Park.)

Never leave your dog alone in a hot car - even for a few minutes. Even when it is only 80 degrees the car can become twice as hot in a matter of minutes!

Dogs are susceptible to heat stroke just like humans. Here are the warning signs of heat stroke in a dog:

  • Excessive panting
  • Blackened tongue and/or gums
  • Anxiety
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting -
  • Disorientation or confusion
  • Dizziness, clumsiness, or lack of coordination
  • Rapid pulse
  • Excessive thirst
  • Glazed eyes

If you suspect your dog is overheating move immediately to a cool location. Try to submerge your dog in cool (not ice cold) water. Focus on getting his neck, chest, and throat cool. However the best treatment is PREVENTION!

Young, old, sick, overweight dogs, and breeds with narrow nasal passages such as Bulldogs, Shihtzu, and Pekinese are more susceptible to the heat so be extra careful about taking these dogs out on a hot day.

If you take your dog out running or walking give him small amounts of water regularly instead of one long drink when he is really thirsty. This will keep him well hydrated.
